Những ngày Tết, bánh tét hay còn gọi là bênh tép (bánh gói) hay lả ru (bánh lá dong) là thứ không thể thiếu của người H’re. Bánh luôn được buộc lại thành đôi “vợ chồng”.
Người H’Re gói bánh tét theo cặp hay gọi là bánh “vợ chồng” để cúng trâu và tặng cho thông gia trong cái Tết đầu tiên con trai lấy vợ hoặc con gái lấy chồng.
Món quà vừa là tấm lòng của hai phía thông gia, vừa thể hiện rằng họ vừa có một năm no đủ, và gửi gắm hi vọng cho một năm mới no ấm, hanh thông.
*Nhân được làm từ đậu phụng.*Khi xưa, bánh chỉ có gạo nếp, rồi dần dần người H’Re mới học cách làm bánh có nhân của người Kinh.*Người già, người trẻ tập trung gói bánh tét “vợ chồng”. Loại bánh này, mỗi năm người H’re chỉ gói một lần.*Bánh tét luôn được người H’re buộc theo cặp. Các cô gái H’re thường gọi bánh tét là bánh “ôm nhau”.*Bánh được cho vào nồi đồng để nấu.*Nồi bánh tét không cần đậy nắp, chỉ cần phủ lá lên trên rồi đè lại bằng hai thanh củi để bánh không bị trồi ra khi nước sôi.*Khi bánh chín, người già nhất trong nhà sẽ làm một nghi lễ nhỏ, mời tổ tiên, thần linh về ăn bánh, gọi là lễ “Xối menh”. Rạng sáng hôm sau, khi sương còn chưa tan, cả nhà ra chuồng trâu làm lễ cúng.*Phong tục tặng bánh “vợ chồng” cho nhau vẫn được người H’Re lưu giữ.
